According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, women have an increased risk of developing more severe and more frequent allergic reactions versus their men counterparts. The reason? Scientists believe the female sex hormone estrogen may be responsible for a woman’s greater sensitivity to allergies and severe allergic reactions.
The team at The Allergy & Environmental Treatment Center, LLC works with each patient, regardless of gender, to provide comprehensive allergy care to manage and/or treat allergy symptoms. However, with this development, scientists may have alternative allergy care solutions for patients based on their individual symptoms and sex.
The clinical trial was conducted on male and female mice. During the study, the team found estrogen inadvertently increased the level and activity of endothelial nitric oxide syntheses (eNOS). Endothelial nitric oxide synthase is an enzyme responsible for symptoms of anaphylaxis, your body’s reaction to an allergy. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that usually produces symptoms like: rapid breathing, a weak pulse, a skin rash, nausea and/or vomiting.
When researchers blocked the enzyme eNOS, the gender disparities between the mice disappeared completely. Furthermore, when scientists blocked the female sex hormone estrogen, they saw a significant reduction in allergic responses. Despite some of the telling results, additional research will need to be conducted to verify this find.
If you have experienced symptoms similar to the ones mentioned above, you may be allergic to a certain substance/stimuli. It’s important you seek the guidance of a highly trained professional, like the one(s) at The Allergy & Environmental Treatment Center, LLC.
